Salary Range: $71,846-$115,129 Placement on the faculty salary scale is based on education, professional certification and experience and will be in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

WHAT IT TAKES
This is a limited term Faculty Coordinator position with 7 sections of release. The term is limited an will the position will be evaluated annually for allocation of sections and role requirements by Health Sciences. While preparatory work may be completed remotely the position is required to attend Coquitlam Campus on a regular basis.

This position is in the Health Sciences Faculty and is responsible for the pedagogical and operational development of student lab learning for Health Sciences programs. This position is responsible for assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating current experiential learning pedagogy with an emphasis on lab education. The individual in this position works collaboratively with the Experiential Learning Specialists, the Manager of Experiential Learning Operations, and Health Sciences faculty to provide excellence in a student-centered experiential learning experience, specifically related to lab practice development, preparation, and implementation. The person in this position is aware of issues relating to equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as the Indigenous perspective. This position provides relief and assistance for the Experiential Simulation Specialist position, if required and a fit with workload.

The faculty member in this position is responsible for coordinating and facilitating lab activities (and any other activities that may evolve) with the Experiential Learning Specialists and the lab faculty, to enhance the delivery of lab sessions and provide assessment for students in Health Science programs. This faculty member is/has:

    • the responsibility to seek collegial decisions
    • the authority to act on emergency issues requiring a decision, pending collegial resolution of the issue
    • responsible for maintaining currency and develops advanced expertise related to the education of students in acquiring experiential skills

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES :

PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT


    • Works collaboratively with the Experiential Learning Specialists in the Health Sciences Simulation Centre to ensure all labs are prepared and set up effectively
    • Coordinates with and assists Health Sciences faculty and staff in developing and coordinating lab skills practice
    • Develops and coordinates policies, procedures, and practices used for lab skill development
    • Stays current with the literature, research, and best practices for lab practice and education, including the application of deliberate practice
    • Identifies and incorporates emerging trends in lab practice, education and best practices
    • Plans orientation and learning activities and practices related to lab skills development
    • Completes all planning and development responsibilities in a timely and effective manner
OPERATIONS AND LIAISON


    • Develops and implements lab activities and practices, in alignment with educational outcomes of all Health Science faculty programs
    • Liaises with Program Coordinators, Health Sciences Experiential Coordinator, BSN Director and Manager Experiential Learning Operations to assess on a term or annual basis the education and operational requirements for enhanced experiential learning related to lab activities and practices for Health Sciences program students
    • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders to provide expertise related to lab skills development
    • Develops and maintains effective communication strategies for communicating information to designated program faculty and liaisons
    • Engages in team building and interprofessional activities in developing lab skills and practices for student learning
    • Works as the operational and communications link between Health Science Departments and internal and external stakeholders in relation to lab preparation and practices
    • Ensures current literature and research on lab practice, education and best practices is relayed to the Faculty of Health Sciences faculty, staff and administration in a timely and effective manner
    • Implements appropriate processes and procedures in relation to issues and trends impacting educational resources and lab activities and practices
    • Completes all operational and liaison responsibilities in a timely and effective manner
    • Attends HS Council, Interactive Learning and Collaboration Committee and other ad hoc meetings relevant to the role
    • Provides relief and assistance in operational matters to the Experiential Learning Facilitator and Development Coordinator, the Experiential Learning Coordinator and the Manager, Experiential Learning Operations
EVALUATION AND QUALITY ASSURANCE


    • Develops quality assurance procedures to ensure that lab activities and practices meet program and course outcomes
    • Implements scholarly and evaluation activities relating to lab activities and practices outcomes
    • Establishes and implements quality assurance mechanisms for lab practices
    • Proposes and participates in scholarly activities related to experiential learning, including lab education as appropriate
    • Represents designated Health Science programs on external stakeholder committees related to lab education as appropriate
    • Assist faculty in supervising and evaluating skill acquisition for students in the scheduled laboratory or simulated settings
    • In conjunction with relevant stakeholders, designs evaluative processes that measure outcomes related to lab education and skill acquisition by students
    • Provides relief and assistance in evaluation and quality assurance matters to the Experiential Learning Facilitator and Development Coordinator and the Experiential Learning Coordinator
    • Assists the Manager, Experiential Learning Operations with Accreditation planning
OTER RELATED DUTIES


    • Maintains currency in knowledge, skills, and abilities related to experiential learning (e.g., lab and simulation)
    • Provides education and training as needed to the Experiential Learning Specialists and Health Sciences faculty on healthcare policies and procedures related to student learning to ensure labs are prepared and set up efficiently
    • Provide training on any new equipment to ensure the Experiential Learning Specialists are current in best practices for student learning
    • Performs other related duties as required
    • Minimum of a Master's degree in Nursing/Psychiatric Nursing/Education or related field and a Bachelor's degree in Nursing/Psychiatric Nursing. PhD or earned doctorate preferred.
    • Current practicing registration in good standing as a registered nurse or psychiatric nurse
    • To be successful in this role, you will need:
    • Completed or is willing to complete Simulation Canada Keystones Apex in Simulation-Based Education or CASN Simulation Certification Program (within 2 years) and CHSE credential (within 3 years) from an accredited/recognized experiential/simulation body.
    • Minimum three years of recent experience in nursing practice with knowledge of diverse health care systems and organizations
    • Minimum three years of recent post-secondary teaching experience in a clinical-based health professional program, BSN , PNUR or Health Care Assistant required.
    • Minimum three years of recent experience in nursing education in theory, lab and clinical education with an understanding of the educational experiences of undergraduate students
    • Demonstrated ability to plan, operationalize, and evaluate evidence-based best practices in experiential learning, with an emphasis on lab and simulation education
    • Demonstrated ability to understand and effectively apply relevant educational and administrative policies and collective agreement provisions, if required
    • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and contribute effectively to a professional team
    • Demonstrated ability to provide lab and simulation-based instruction for the Experiential Learning Specialists and faculty, such as preparing simulation set up, teaching simulation, pre-briefing and debriefing workshops
    • Expertise in skills and competencies related to BSN , PNUR , or HCA programs with an emphasis on skills required for entry-level practice in those professions/careers.
    • Awareness or ability to develop expertise in universal design for learning.
    • Demonstrated ability to assess program needs, set priorities and independently develop work plans based on an assessment of needs.
    • Demonstrated ability and resilience in managing ambiguity and change.

    • Demonstrated leadership and project management skills.

    • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of computer and web-based software, including simulation-based software, Microsoft Office and SharePoint
    • Knowledge of health sciences professional programs offered in Health Sciences at Douglas College.
    • Demonstrated positive and effective interpersonal and networking skills, including teamwork, conflict management and resolution skills
    • Demonstrated ability to develop solutions-oriented approaches to complex situations.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality
    • Demonstrated ability to multitask and manage multiple projects in a timely and effective manner.
